How should be display updates to end-user?

Right now extension update notifications are being shown as a modal/popup on the website itself, like when you are a new user and the dialog pops up and tells you how to use the site. This works, but it can get in the way. Another extension on Chrome, called HoverZoom, uses HTML5 notification popups (like the ones that show up if you have a new PM or chat message), to show you that it has been updated, the version number, and a URL to click on if you are interested in seeing what was updated.

Thoughts?

Much cleaner IMO. There will be a point a modal won't be able to contain all the update information.

Optionally a version number in the boilerplate with 'Change Log' text someone can click on as well.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking too.
